AMAZING JOURNEYS
By: Ross Anthony
We're the only species that's stopped at the border for visa verification.
You think birds carry passports? Forget it. They don't even have backpacks.
Can you imagine a Canadian goose trying to carry a "Let's Go South
America?" Face facts, animals travel light and navigate without flipping
pages.
Follow Monarchs as they flock in flurries to the forests of Mexico. They
gather in piles on branches, blanketing trees. Pet the gray whale on it's
way to Baja Cal. Fly with the birds who find their way through the day
and night with a variety of expert navigational tools. Then it's off to
Africa for a glimpse into zebra and even human migration.
But the red crabs of Christmas Island will no doubt burn themselves into
your memory. So many, they string across the grass like Christmas tree
lights, interrupting a game of golf, integrating themselves into school
children's playtime, and becoming temporary pets in local households as
they migrate.
This rather conventional big screen documentary, projects some remarkable
images, accompanied with a more sobering slant, "Our blazing success
has darkened the lives of many other species." Though sometimes heavy-handed
the narrator's words are sweetly crafted.
